What is this Course about?
This course will help you learn how literacy skills such as reading and writing can be developed at school and at home. It will include learning about phonics and grammar and how these subjects are taught in schools. Learners will be given ideas and resources for activities that can help children develop literacy skills at home and at school.
Topics and activities include:
- How to use stories to help develop reading and writing skills
- Understanding Phonics (Key terms, Phases, pronunciation of sounds) and preparing children for the Phonics Screening Test
- Ideas to make writing fun and encourage reluctant writers
- Grammar; understanding grammatical terms such as contractions and clauses
- Spelling; spelling patterns and ways to remember them
Who is this Course for?
Those interested in learning about the English curriculum content in primary schools
Individuals wishing to understand how English is taught in primary schools in the UK
Individuals who are aiming to support children with primary school learning
Those wishing to improve their basic English skills
Entry Requirements to do this Course:
A basic level of conversational and written English is required (at least Entry 3)
How you will be assessed?
Through questions and answers and the completion of a weekly learner reflection.
How much studying will I need to do outside of the lesson?
There will be no compulsory study outside of the lesson but you are encouraged to try some of the ideas and activities with children during the week.

Except for the registration fee, this course/workshop is fully funded by The Department for Education Adult Skills Fund, for adults who meet the following criteria:
- A Hertfordshire Resident
- Aged 19 years or older on 31st August 2025
- A UK national or anyone with a lawful immigration status in the UK. You will not be eligible if you are in the UK under any of the following conditions:
- On a student visa
- On a sponsorship visa
- On a visa or residence permit that restricts or prohibits study
- In the UK on holiday (with or without a visa)
