Thinking of setting up your own business?
Coming up with a business idea and starting a business can seem overwhelming and complicated. There are so many things you must consider. This course will help you to explore different areas of self-employment.
This course will cover 5 main areas:
Session 1: Introduction
What makes a great business, enterprising ideas, importance of research & planning.
Session 2 Business Plan
What is it, executive summaries, content list, complete template.
Session 3 Finances & budgeting
Borrowing money, complete ‘Moneysense quiz’ (interest rates, APR, different types of loans), raising money. Keeping accounts.
Session 4 Ownership types
Sole trader vs limited company vs partnership. Differences, advantages/disadvantages. Video clips of existing types with questions. Liability/limited liability.
Session 5 Entrepreneurial Skills
Inspiration from existing well-known entrepreneurs, self-evaluate/rate your own skills, what could you develop to be better at, importance of literacy & numeracy for running your own business!
You will also look back at what you have learned and think about what you may like to do next such as ‘Advanced Digital Skills’ if you are considering building an online business!

Venue Information
This course/workshop is run as real-time online using Google Classroom. This means that instead of having to go to a classroom, the classroom comes to you! You are taught by a teacher and you will have classmates that you share ideas with. To take part you will need a tablet or laptop/computer with a webcam and microphone to enable you to interact. A few days before the start, your teacher will email you with instructions on how to join the class.

Delivery - Online:
This course is run as real-time online. This means that instead of having to go to a classroom, the classroom comes to you! You are taught by a teacher and you will have classmates that you share ideas with. The course starts at the same time each week and runs for 2 hours per week for 5 weeks. You are expected to attend all sessions.
To be able to take part on this course you will need a tablet or laptop/computer with a webcam and microphone.
A few days before the course starts, your teacher will email you an introduction to your course and the link to follow to join the class.
*Except for the registration fee, this course is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet the following criteria:
- A Hertfordshire Resident
- Aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2022
- UK National and lived in UK for last 3 years or EEA National with settled/pre-settled status and lived in EEA for last 3 years
