    What is this Course about?

    This qualification will help you to develop an understanding of the teaching and learning environment in a school whilst also preparing you for further learning and training. It covers areas such as school procedures, curriculum requirements, child and young person development, health and safety and communication skills.

    The course is made up of 3 Units:

    • Understanding schools as organisations including different types of schools, school policies and procedures, different areas of learning.
    • Understanding how to keep children and young people healthy, safe and well including child development, health and safety, safeguarding, healthy eating, equality, diversity and inclusion.
    • Understanding how to communicate with children, young people and adult including different methods of communication, characteristics of good teamwork and positive behaviour management

    Who is this Course for?

    This qualification is aimed at learners who are thinking of volunteering or working in a school setting. 

    Entry Requirements to do this Course:

    Learners will be expected to have Level 1 English, or equivalent skills.

    Learners must have basic digital skills to be able to complete and upload work on a digital platform.

    How you will be assessed?

    This is a portfolio based course. Assessment tasks will be set weekly and will vary from written assignments, quizzes, creating posters etc.

    How much studying will I need to do outside of the lesson?

    Homework tasks will be set every week, so learners should be prepared to spend 2-3 hrs each week outside of the lesson time to complete these assignments.

    What learners need to bring/supply

    Learners must have a laptop or tablet with a working camera to access Google Classroom.

    This course runs once a week from 12.30pm to 3pm starting on Thursday 13th November 2025 and finishing on Thursday 29th January.

    NOTE: This course is for Hertfordshire Residents Only - *With the exception of the registration fee, this course/workshop is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet a set criteria - please see further details under the 'Further Information' heading.

    Online live streamed - Google Classroom

    Venue Information

    This course/workshop is run as real-time online using Google Classroom. This means that instead of having to go to a classroom, the classroom comes to you! You are taught by a teacher and you will have classmates that you share ideas with. To take part you will need a tablet or laptop/computer with a webcam and microphone to enable you to interact. A few days before the start, your teacher will email you with instructions on how to join the class.

    Except for the registration fee, this course is fully funded by The Department for Education Adult Skills Fund, for adults who meet the following criteria:

    • A Hertfordshire Resident
    • Aged 19 years or older on 31st August 2025
    • A UK national or anyone with a lawful immigration status in the UK. You will not be eligible if you are in the UK under any of the following conditions:
      • On a student visa
      • On a sponsorship visa
      • On a visa or residence permit that restricts or prohibits study
      • In the UK on holiday (with or without a visa)

    To be fully funded you will also need to be either unemployed and claiming benefits or working and earning below £25,750
