    What is this course about?

    This course is designed to help adults understand what ‘phonics’ is and how phonics is taught in school from age 3-7 yrs old.

    You’ll gain confidence, new knowledge and skills for yourself whilst learning ways to help your child develop their phonics skills at home.

    We will explain different Phonics terms such as ‘digraph’ and ‘segmenting’. You will learn about the six phases of phonics and how children progress through each phase using engaging, interactive activities. Learners will find out about the Phonics Screening check in Year One and will be given ideas and resources to enable them to develop children’s reading and writing skills at home.

    Who is this course for?

    This course is aimed at parents of children aged 3-7years or people wishing to work with children of that age.

    Entry Requirements to do this course:

    A good level of conversational and written English is required

    How you will be assessed?

    Through questions and answers and the completion of a weekly learner reflection.

    How much studying will I need to do outside of the lesson?

    There will be no compulsory study outside of the lesson but you will be expected to put into practise what you have learnt and try some of the ideas and activities with your children during the week.

    Please note that babies and children cannot attend this course.

    *Except for the registration fee, this course/workshop is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet the following criteria:

    • A Hertfordshire Resident
    • Aged 19 years or older on 31st August 2025
    • UK National and lived in the UK for the last 3 years or EEA National with settled/pre-settled status and lived in the UK/EEA for the last 3 years
