    What is this course about?

    This Functional Skills Entry Level 3 course is delivered face to face.

    This It is for people who are beginning to use English in their work and everyday life.

    You will be taught by a qualified teacher guiding you through the course.  Your course will be taught once a week for 2.5 hrs. 

    The course is split into 2 parts:

    • Part 1 - will prepare you to study a Functional Skills qualification course. In this time your teacher will also assess you, to see if you are ready for a qualification course.
    • Part 2 - will give you the tools and strategies to communicate effectively in the written and spoken word and to pass your exams.

    Who is this course for?

    For people who want to build up to a recognised qualification in English (equivalent to GCSE) to allow them to progress to further study, education or career progression.

    Entry Requirements to do this course:

    You will be asked to undertake a BKSB test online to determine your level.  Please also tells us on enquiry whether you have already gained a qualification in English.  

    How you will be assessed?

    You will be taught to communicate effectively using the spoken and written word and will sit exams in the three main elements of English which are speaking and listening, reading and writing. Spelling, punctuation and grammar are integral to the course.

    You will travel to one of our exam locations to take the reading paper (these will be separate dates and we will provide details in advance to allow you to make travel arrangements).

    How much studying will I need to do outside of the lesson?

    This is a recognised qualification course and as such you will be asked to work at least 1 hour outside of the lesson each week. 

    What learners need to bring/supply

    You will need a PC or laptop with good Wi-Fi and a webcam or built-in camera. Please a mobile phone will not suffice. Pen/pencil (including a highlighter) and notebook. A folder to store your sheets would also be useful. 

    Course dates: Every Monday 12.30pm-3pm starting Monday 8th September 2025 and finishing on Monday 9th February 2026.
    (please note there are no classes on Monday 27th October, Monday 22nd December and Monday 29th December 2025)

    Except for the registration fee, this course is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet the following criteria:

    • A Hertfordshire Resident
    • Aged 19 years or older on 31st August 2025
    • A UK national or anyone with a lawful immigration status in the UK. You will not be eligible if you are in the UK under any of the following conditions:
      • On a student visa
      • On a sponsorship visa
      • On a visa or residence permit that restricts or prohibits study
      • In the UK on holiday (with or without a visa)
