    About this event

    Information about this training

Thanks to advances in effective treatment, people living with HIV are now living longer, healthier lives. Today, around 50% of people living with HIV in the UK are aged 50 or over.

To support this, Public Health Hertfordshire has produced a new 7-minute training video designed specifically for social care professionals working with older people living with HIV.

Developed as part of the HIV Action Plan for England, the animation was informed by a real Hertfordshire case and created with local HIV services, care provider organisations and people with lived experience.

HIV related stigma can have an impact on people’s wellbeing and access to care. Having the right knowledge helps us challenge outdated assumptions, promote dignity and ensure that people living with HIV receive the support they deserve.

    Learning outcomes

    • Challenge common misconceptions about HIV in later life
    • Identify and address stigma and discrimination experienced by older people living with HIV, promoting respectful, person‑centred care.
    • Apply HIV specific knowledge to safeguarding practice, recognising vulnerabilities and safeguarding concerns affecting older people with HIV.
    • Demonstrate appropriate infection prevention and control practices in the context of HIV, dispelling unfounded fears of transmission.
    • Integrate HIV awareness into anti‑discrimination practice, ensuring compliance with the Equality Act 2010 when supporting older people.
