Evidence Base: Children and young people with SEND can have a more challenging experience when approaching or during puberty. Hormonal changes coupled with being Neurodivergent presents significant additional challenges with navigating this period of change
Objective: This workshop is designed to help parents and carers understand more about the particular challenges faced by neurodiverse young people when they are going through puberty, and the impact this can have on their family and wider circle. Parents and carers will leave equipped with lots of strategies and approaches.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand the characteristics of puberty that can have a significant effect on neurodiverse young people including:
o Physical, sexual and cognitive development
o Mentstruation
o Erections and wet dreams
o Social development and independence
o Risks and vulnerabilities
o Urinal etiquette
o Developing healthy relationships
- Explore practical approaches which can be taken to address inappropriate sexualised behaviours
- Understand anxiety and anger in puberty
- Look at how it’s never too early to start planning for puberty
- Be equipped with practical strategies and approaches to support their children and young people through puberty
