Navigating the SEND world (SPACE)

A workshop that looks navigating the services and support available to Parents of children with Special Educational Needs in Hertfordshire.

Join us for an exciting online workshop, Navigating the SEND World, designed to empower you with the knowledge of what services are available to support individuals with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).

Evidence Base: Our pioneering Navigating the SEND world workshop was established due to the extended period of time children and young people in Hertfordshire typically need to wait for assessment and diagnosis. Parents and carers can be bewildered by the language, professional services, and systems (health, education and social care) they need to understand and navigate to get the support they need. Paediatricians from Pre-Diagnostic and Diagnostic Clinics refer parents and carers directly to SPACE to provide advice to help them to understand the journey.

Objective: An opportunity to meet other parent/carers who are in a similar situation and learn what support is available for families in Hertfordshire before and following a diagnosis, across health care, education and social care. Parents and carers will feel more confident and able to navigate the complexities of the SEND world, so they can access the support they need for their family

Course Content:

• Feelings and emotions parent/carers may experience

• The importance of self-care

• Resources such as carers card, HAND card, Sunflower lanyard

• Support services across Hertfordshire

• Introduction to the language & starting the journey

• Children and young people’s health services

• Schools and education services

• Family and social care services

• Support services for parents and carers

Learning Outcomes:

• Parents and carers will feel less isolated and more empowered to seek support.

• Increased awareness of what services are available for families.

• Learn the acronyms and language they will need to be familiar with

• Understanding the referral systems

• Be able to navigate the Herts SEND Local Offer and gain knowledge of services and support across health, education and social care

• Improve understanding of the diagnosis pathway and what it means for their child

• Feel confident about what to do next and how to access the support and services they need
