    About this event

    4 week course on Wednesdays from 18th September to 9th October 2024, 2pm to 3pm.

    Tai Chi has developed from the ancient practice of Qigong, bringing the mind and body together in harmony, with slow, flowing movements and a deep, quiet, focused attention.

    It is an excellent way to maintain good health and relaxation and helps to strengthen the system at all levels. The principles of Tai Chi can be applied to everyday life to use the mind and body effectively and to look after ourselves in the broadest sense. It brings together aspects of meditation, oriental healing, relaxation, self defence and stress management.

    Course content will include:

    • Exercises to focus the mind and relax the body;
    • An introduction to the basic principles of Tai Chi and oriental philosophy and how to apply them in everyday life;
    • A short series of Tai Chi moves (form) for practice at home;
    • Applying principles which may be particularly appropriate for carers, e.g. pushing a wheelchair with less effort; dealing with emotions; taking time out for oneself; letting go of unhelpful thinking; learning to respond rather than reacting.

    Although the course is intended for the benefit of carers, you might choose to share some of what you learn with those you care for.

    The course will be of most benefit to those who aim to get to all four sessions, although we do, of course, recognise that sometimes the unexpected crops up.

    Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and soft soled shoes, eg lightweight trainers, plimsoll type footwear. The practice is normally done standing but seated is also possible for those who find standing for an hour might be too much.

    Handouts will be provided for reference.

    Please complete and return the health questionnaire to learning@carersinherts.org.uk at least one week before attending.

    Download Health Questionnaire here.

    The course will be taught by Liz Welch. She has over 30 years’ experience in the field of Tai Chi, Qigong, Shiatsu, Chinese Medicine theory and philosophy, acupressure and meditation. She was a carer for many years for her mother, who suffered from dementia. She teaches Tai Chi and Qigong in the Hertford area and online. See https://lizwelch.co.uk

    Carers in Herts

    We aim to ensure that all carers in Hertfordshire are recognised and valued; are informed and supported in their caring role; have an opportunity for a life outside caring; can exercise a collective voice, and can be involved in consultation and planning to ensure high quality support services for themselves and the people they care for.
