About this event
Evidence Base: Autism is still underdiagnosed in girls. They are more likely to be able to mask or camouflage their autistic characteristics; they often present differently; and there is an underlying gender bias in existing screening, referral processes and diagnostic criteria and tools. This results in anxiety and mental health issues – particularly as girls enter secondary education.
Objective: This workshop is designed to help parents and carers understand more about the particular challenges which autistic girls can face as well as leave equipped with strategies and approaches to help celebrate and support them.
Workshop Content:
- What is Autism
- Understanding girls on the spectrum
- Key gender differences
- Masking/Camouflaging
- Celebrating and how to support
Learning Outcomes:
- Explore the general characteristics of autism
- Understand gender difference and how autism may present differently in girls
- Understand masking and camouflaging and the impact it has
- Explore approaches and strategies to help, support and celebrate autistic girls
This workshop is commissioned by Hertfordshire County Council (HCC)
