About this event
Talks and document display
In 1662 the Hearth Tax was introduced as a property tax based on the number of fireplaces. The resulting records are an interesting insight into the country at the time. Join Dr Andrew Wareham (University of Roehampton), Director of the Hearth Tax Research Project, and County Archivist Chris Bennett for a fascinating look at 17th century Hertfordshire to celebrate the launch of the digital edition of the Hertfordshire Hearth Tax.
The evening will start with a display of contemporary documents from the collection of Hertfordshire Archives followed by the speakers. Tea and coffee will be served in the Local Studies Library.
