    What is this course about?

    You’ll gain confidence, new knowledge and skills for yourself whilst learning ways to support development of reading and writing through Phonics.

    This course is designed to help adults understand what ‘phonics’ is and how phonics is taught in school from age 3-7 yrs old. We will explain different Phonics terms such as ‘digraph’ and ‘segmenting’. You will learn about the six phases of phonics and what aspects are taught in each phase through engaging, interactive activities. Learners will find out about the Phonics Screening check in Year One and will be given ideas and resources to enable them to develop children’s reading and writing skills through phonics.

    Who is this course for?

    This course is aimed at parents of children aged 3-7 years or people wishing to work with children of that age.

    A good level of conversational and written English is required

    NOTE: This course is for Hertfordshire Residents Only - With the exception of the registration fee, this course is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet a set *criteria - please see below for 'Further Information'.

    Venue Information

    This course/workshop is run as real-time online using Google Classroom. This means that instead of having to go to a classroom, the classroom comes to you! You are taught by a teacher and you will have classmates that you share ideas with. To take part you will need a tablet or laptop/computer with a webcam and microphone to enable you to interact. A few days before the start, your teacher will email you with instructions on how to join the class.

    *Except for the registration fee, this course is fully funded by The Education & Skills Funding Agency for adults who meet the following criteria:

    • A Hertfordshire Resident
    • Aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2023
    • UK National and lived in the UK for the last 3 years or EEA National with settled/pre-settled status and lived in the UK/EEA for the last 3 years
